dewulfi, maleDiagnosis and Notes

The female is very similar to those of the other members of the subgenus. Campbell & Pelham-Clinton (1960) discuss characters which may be used to separate the British females of the obsoletus group. However the females of this species, as well as those of obsoletus and scoticus are variable in size and wing markings, and confirmation of its presence is best carried out by the examination of the male genitalia. The ninth sternite is deeply emarginate, but it differs from C. chiopterus in having the ninth sternite membrane spiculate. AR 1.06-1.19; SD 3,11-15. The third segment of the palp is swollen, with a single sensory pit; there are two spermathecae. Downes & Kettle (1952) describe and figure the mesonotal markings as characters to separate members of the obsoletus group, but these markings are difficult to see in slide- mounted specimens or in distorted dry specimens.
Figure of wing from Delecolle 1985, and of genitalia from Kremer 1966.
