heliophilus, maleDiagnosis and Notes

A small, dark species with whitish unmarked wings; it might well be mistaken for a species of Brachypogon or Ceratopogon but in those genera the claws, particularly of the hind legs, are much longer and sensilla are not present on the terminal segments of the female antenna. The AR of the female is 1.08-1.13; the SD is 3, 11-15. The male genitalia are as shown; the posterior margin of the ninth tergite broad, with a deep central notch, the paramers tapering to a fine point. Delecolle (1985) figures the cibarium with numerous small teeth, a feature not mentioned by other authors. It is not known whether this character is shared by other close relatives.
The figures of the wing and cibarium are from Delecolle (1985) and of the male genitalia from Edwards (1939).
