Culicoides paolae
Boorman, Mellor & Scaramozzino 1996: 501. TL Italy
(Boorman, Mellor & Scaramozzino 1996: 501. ♂, ♀, desc, figs)
Diagnosis and Notes
This species could easily be
confused with C. subschultzei, but differs in
having two pale spots straddling vein m1, just below the costal pale spot
below the end of the radial cells, and another two pale spots straddling vein
m2 just below and distal to these. It differs from all other schultzei group species in having a rather higher AR of
1.10-1.32, and more especially in having sensilla on antennal segments 3-15.
The male genitalia have the ninth tergite with a wide posterior margin and the
ninth sternite membrane bare.
See also the notes under C. kingi.
The figure of the male genitalia is from Boorman, Mellor & Scaramozzino
(1989).
